SCHEIDT PASSES UP BASKETBALL TO START CAREER AT UT
(continued)
Scheidt was a starter for the Lady Admirals' basketball
team, and missing her senior season was a drawback about
graduating early.
"I'm really excited but sad I can't play basketball," she
said. "I think even if I didn't graduate early I don't think
I'd play basketball. They (UT) just said it was my decision
but would pretty much prefer me not to play."
David Moore, who resigned as Farragut's coach after the 2009
season, won't forget the summer day in 2007 when Scheidt
walked into the gym with her parents and was ready to join
the volleyball team.
"We were like, 'She's 5-10 and she's a setter. There aren't
many of those,' " Moore said. "She fit right in and was
great with the other players and was wonderful to coach."
And the move from Firth, Neb., to Farragut didn't faze
Scheidt.
She never looked back.
"I'm unlike many people," Scheidt said. "I was excited to
move. I've had great opportunities open up since we moved,
so it's been a blessing."
Scheidt helped the Lady Admirals to a 41-10 record this fall
before their season ended with a loss at Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett
in the state sectionals.
Last year, the Lady Admirals reached the Class AAA state
tournament and were eliminated in pool play. They lost to
Oak Ridge in the Region 2-AAA semifinals when Scheidt was a
sophomore.
Scheidt has her sights set on future goals, not ones that
have passed by.
"Last year we went to state. It was a fun experience," she
said. "Hopefully we'll get a national championship and an
SEC championship in a few years (at UT). I have three really
good players (freshmen) coming in with me. . . . I'm really
excited about playing with them and I'm excited about the
coaches, too."
Scheidt was selected to the 24-player Under Armour
All-America first team by the American Volleyball Coaches
Association, and her goal is to eventually play in the
Olympics. She trained with the U.S. Junior National Team in
Chula Vista, Calif., during the Christmas break last year.
Recruited by UT as a setter, the 6-foot-1 Scheidt was an
all-court player for Farragut.
"She's just an outstanding player and an even better
person," Moore said. "It's been a joy for me to have the
opportunity to coach her the last three years. I think she's
got a chance to be an excellent player at the next level.
I'm just proud of her and proud I had the opportunity to
coach her."
